In Classical music, in Flamenco and Jazz there are countless excellent guitarists. However it is rare to find a guitarist that excels in all three directions. What is yet absolutely new in the music scene is to come across someone who combines all these and interprets them through his own aura and personal artistic style. In Wolfgang Gerhard’s music, classical music meets the joy and livelihood of Flamenco going in a jazzy direction harmonywise and inspirationwise. Wolfgang Gerhard has been playing the piano since he was 5 and since his early youth, he has played in countless jazz bands. Not so long later was he to meet and have his initiation to Flamenco guitar by the world famous flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia. These and later encounters with the flamenco legend Paco de Lucia, with whom Gerhard has been in close contact till today, motivated him to go to Spain and there have the experience of flamenco playing with Flamenco Dancers, singers and musicians in its authentic environment.
In the meantime, he studied Classical Guitar and Piano in Musikhochschule in Köln. As a solo concert guitarist, he has performed all over Europe as well as in South America giving many concerts.
Later on, he performed with highly acclaimed Spanish flamenco dancers such as Jose de Udaeta, Nina Corti, Franca Roberto, and many others. Afterwards, he worked at Düsseldorf Theater Hall under Roberto Ciulli’s direction as an actor, theatre musician and composer.
From 1978 till 1984 he founded and lead his project “Jazz meets Flamenco” with which he made several records which was given the “German Record of the Year Prize” in 1983. From 1984 onwards he dedicated himself to more Studio work and a quieter musical life since he settled and decided for a family life with his partner and two little children. He has produced countless albums in his own studio from jazz to hardrock during those years and finally in 1991 he could return to his own passion and he produced “Latino Music”. Since then he has been producing music in this genre, from Salsa to Tango, Fado, Flamenco, Bossa Nova to Mexican Ranchero with artists from these countries always taking part with his highly influential guitar playing. With the new wave of Latin Dance Music he also integrated Keyboard playing into his spectre of styles and performed in over 50 cd projects as producer, composer and keyboarder. His instrumental Solo-concept “Camino de Lobo” has been successfully appealing and in demand, for years now in many diverse album projects.
